Capturing the Past: Photoshoot at the Historic Trial Bay Gaol

Our team at Southbank Creative recently had the incredible opportunity to photograph the renovations at the historic Trial Bay Gaol in Arakoon, and it was an experience we’ll always remember. This iconic site, with its rich history dating back to the late 1800s, has played many roles—from a prison for convict laborers to an internment camp during World War I. The recent renovations have worked to preserve its historical character while making it more accessible to modern visitors, and we were proud to be part of documenting this transformation.
Ground Shots: Capturing the Detail
For this project, we used a combination of ground and drone photography to showcase the site from multiple angles. On the ground, we focused on capturing the fine details of the renovation work—from the restored stonework and windows to the ongoing efforts of the team working hard to bring the jail back to life. These shots gave us the chance to highlight the craftsmanship and the meticulous care involved in preserving this historical treasure.
Drone Shots: A New Perspective
Despite having to battle the near gale force coastal winds our CASA licensed drone pilot captured some amazing images. These aerial shots from our drone gave us a fresh perspective on the site. From above, we were able to show the detailed renovations to the roof of the main entry building. The aerial views also help show the sheer scale of the site, set against the breathtaking backdrop of the coastline.
Telling the Story Through Photography
What made this project so special for us was how the photos came together to tell the full story of the Trial Bay Jail—not just the renovations but the rich history embedded in the site itself. Each photo, whether taken from the ground or the sky, helped us capture the essence of the jail and its place in history, from its convict past to its restoration today.
We’re proud of how the images turned out and excited to see the Trial Bay Jail continue to stand as a symbol of the region’s history. If you’re planning to visit, we hope our photos give you a deeper appreciation for this incredible site!
